Little Karen

Little Karen
Little Karen is a Danish love song dating back to the 19th century. As a universal expression of humankind, it depicts the periodicity of this emotion in a sweet and simple way.

In my setting I attempt to explore love’s “seasonality”: starting from the uncertainty and innocence or naïveté that accompanies a potential romance; to the mutual affection and companionship that develops during the relationship; and finishing with the continual reflection on how it began and where it’s going.

Text:

Do you recall, in Autumn, when home from the fair we went,
When your eyes met mine, then a questioning look they sent?
There came into my mind that hitherto I'd been blind,
Tell me, little Karen, what were you thinking then,
Tell me, little Karen, what were you thinking then?

Do you recall in Winter, we sat by the fireplace?
I spoke of adventure, but seeing your dear face
I had to stop, you see,
When you looked up at me,
Tell me, little Karen, what were you thinking then,
Tell me, little Karen, what were you thinking then?

Do you remember Christmas, the dancing and flutes that played?
O'er the floor together so merrily we swayed,
I looked so long at you
You blushed a crimson hue,
Tell me, little Karen, what were you thinking then,
Tell me, little Karen, what were you thinking then?

You see, it is the Spring now, and birds are all building nests,
Flower buds are op'ning, the trees in bridal dress,
All of Life seems to sing,
Dreaming of Love and Spring,
Tell me, little Karen, what are you thinking now,
Tell me, little Karen, what are you thinking now?
