Phonomontage

Phonomontage
A montage is a technique of producing a new composite whole from fragments of pictures, text or sound. In my case it is sounds so the work is titled Phonomontage.

The sound sources are ‘live’ from a piano and ‘pre-recorded’ from a synthesizer. As such, it is an example of electroacoustic music.

During the composition I attempted to bring the timbral possibilities of the piano into a closer union with the ‘synthetic’ sounds. The pianist plays on the keyboard and ‘in’ the piano (bowing and plucking strings, striking keys that have objects placed between the strings and performing short pitch glissandi by sliding a glass tumbler laterally across the strings).

Most of the electronic material was synthesized on voltage-controlled analog equipment except for the central section which was digitally synthesized on a computer.
